Town of Edgefield
The South Carolina Department of Commerce, or SCDOC, awarded a Community Development Block Grant worth $447,088 to the Town of Edgefield. The Courthouse Square in downtown Edgefield previously had two-way traffic. The proposed plan converted two sections of the square into one-way (counterclockwise) traffic. This allowed for an increase in pedestrian space by an average of 10 feet. KBS improved the public realm by providing more landscaped areas, outdoor dining, bench gliders, string lighting, decorative paving, and water fountains.
The transformation of the Edgefield Square has created a vibrant atmosphere that has been recognized by an increase in pedestrian traffic as well as private development. Since the completion of the streetscape project the Plantation House, a 20,000 square foot historic building overlooking the square, was purchased for a planned boutique hotel, complete with three street level retail shops.
